Paplitę vidutinio ir šaltojo klimato srityse. Auga tundroje, pelkėse, pelkėtuose miškuose, stovinčiuose vandenyse. Neturi nei šaknų, nei rizoidų. Stiebas iki 20 cm aukščio.
